90% My Brother The Devil
All Critics (40) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (36) | Rotten (4)
A story of brothers that's both tough and tender.
"My Brother the Devil" is a promising debut that marks El Hosaini as a filmmaker to watch, but one still very much in the developmental stages.
For at least part of its length, "My Brother the Devil" brings refreshing changes to a genre badly in need of them.
Nuances of faith, politics and sexual identity enrich what initially presents as a classic good son-bad son tale, and although the film's melting-pot patois is occasionally too dense to decipher, we get the gist.
El Hosaini fights the conventions of the brotherly gangster melodrama, but the conventions win.
It's far superior to what usually comes out of the British slums in the genre of gangland thrillers.
Ultimately feels a little flat, but there's promise that the director will carry on to stronger work, with several scenes here delivering exceptional grace and texture that all but guarantees a bright cinematic future.
Sally El Hosaini shows a deft hand in her story telling and direction belying her inexperience behind the camera.
When a both a dog and friend of Rashid's are killed in a violent gang encounter, El Hosaini frames both of their lifeless bodies on the street in a powerful image that tells of two innocents both bred to fight.
[El Hosaini] has a devil of a time getting a handle on this complicated story.
Familiar youth crime/coming-of-age framework, novel setting and focus group.
El Housani's freshman effort is certainly visually accomplished, but there's precious little meat on its bones.
Highly recommended. (Writer-director) El Hosaini handles the various volatile relationships within the film with intelligence and sensitivity.
An engrossing debut from director Sally El Hosaini, My Brother the Devil is as authentic, emotionally complex and powerfully acted as any film you'll see this year.
Unsure performances and some decades-old gangster-film stereotypes hamper this acute, beautifully shot portrait of Egyptian teenagers fighting to survive in a rough London neighborhood.
With My Brother the Devil, writer-director Sally El Hosaini tells a story both operatic in its implications and quotidian in its sensory, day-to-day details.
It's refreshing to see a new generation reinterpret the classics. James Cagney would be proud.
There probably aren't too many Welsh-Egyptian writer-directors like newcomer Sally El Hosaini. But she's clearly representative of a new kind of diversity in modern Britain. And one which bodes well for its filmmaking future.

Happening now: Selling plants to help pets via ... - West Seattle Blog

At the time of last year?s Furry Faces Foundation plant sale, F3 leader and plant-raiser Teri Ensley?s house still had damage to fix from a fire a few months earlier. Now ? as the 2013 plant sale begins ? Teri is back in her house after rehab and repairs by Ventana Construction (WSB sponsor), work she is so proud of that she?s even incorporated Ventana?s name into the plant sale:

The shelving holding plants on the south side of Teri?s house is dubbed ?Ventana Terrace? now, signage and all. Today is the first of four days of the sale ? till 4 pm, then again tomorrow 10 am-4 pm, and the weekend of June 1-2, 3809 46th SW. It all started with more than 1,000 plants on ?Ventana Terrace? and in the front yard, including herbs, perennials, annuals, vegetables, more ? and the F3 ?Tag Your Pet? campaign is happening there; read about it all in this WSB Forums post.

Modular Beach Pavilions Are Replacing the Ones Hurricane Sandy Ruined
It's been seven months since Hurricane Sandy ravaged New York City-area beaches, decimating facilities like lifeguard stations and changing rooms, and it's been a race against the clock to get the beaches back in shape for the summer season. As part of the rebuilding effort, Garrison Architects were tapped to create 37 modular beach pavilions to replace the ones that were washed away?and starting next week, they'll be popping up at destinations like Rockaway Beach and Coney Island.

Saudi officials expand labs to track deadly virus
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia says it has dedicated nine additional laboratories to help investigators track a deadly new respiratory virus related to SARS that appears to be centered in the kingdom.
Thursday's Health Ministry announcement follows its report that two health care workers became ill this month after being exposed to patients with the virus. Experts are closely studying whether it can spread easily from person to person.
Since September 2012, the World Health Organization has been informed of 40 confirmed cases of the virus, mostly in Saudi Arabia but also in Europe and Jordan. At least 20 people have died, including 15 reportedly in Saudi Arabia.
The virus has been compared to SARS, a pneumonia that surfaced in China in late 2002 and killed at least 774 people worldwide.

Galaxy S 4 mini surfaces again, strikes a few poses
Mum may still be the word at Samsung, but between user agent profiles, leaked details and the word of the Wall Street Journal, the arrival of the Galaxy S 4 mini seems imminent. Still, there's nothing like a leaked gallery of snapshots to stoke the fire, and Weibo user PunkPanda -- who seems to have a track record of spying Samsung devices early -- is happy to provide. A series of new images shows the diminutive Galaxy sizing up to its full sized sibling and a stray cigarette. Rumor has it the handset will debut later this summer with a 4.3-inch display, a dual-core 1.6GHz processor and an 8MP camera. No word on pricing, availability or market just yet, but check out the attached gallery for an early eyeful.

Your Only Chance to Hear a "Space Oddity" Cover Recorded in Space
ISS Commander and mustachioed Canadian Chris Hadfield has given us no end of joys during his current five-month stint floating above our blue orb. But perhaps none of them is as touching?and just downright incredible?as his sendoff cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity."
Here Hadfield, who's coming back to Earth tomorrow, takes on David Bowie's "Space Oddity" and it's just the best. We get to see ISS in flight, watch Hadfield's guitar float through gravity, and listen to his surprisingly good astro-voice. If you can think of a better way to spend your last day in space, I'd love to hear it.

CA-NEWS Summary
Sharif stages comeback in landmark Pakistan election
ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Toppled in a 1999 coup, jailed and exiled, Nawaz Sharif has made a triumphant election comeback and was heading for a third term as Pakistan's prime minister. The polls were a landmark, marking the first time one elected government will replace another. But the vote failed to realize the hopes of many that dynastic politics would end after years of misrule and corruption.
Car bombs kill 43 in Turkey near Syrian border
REYHANLI, Turkey (Reuters) - Twin car bombs killed 43 people and wounded many more in a Turkish town near the Syrian border on Saturday and the government said it suspected Syrian involvement. The bombing increased fears that Syria's civil war was dragging in neighboring states despite renewed diplomatic moves towards ending two years of fighting in which more than 70,000 people have been killed.
Bulgarians vote in election unlikely to soothe anger
SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgarians vote on Sunday in an election forced by protests over poverty and corruption, with expectations of a close result that could leave the poorest EU country without a working government. The rightist GERB party, which resigned after violent demonstrations in February, is running neck-and-neck with the Socialists. GERB pledges to keep debts under control, while the Socialists say they will spend more and create jobs.
Rafsanjani's last-minute entry transforms Iranian race
DUBAI (Reuters) - Former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani threw himself into Iran's election race on Saturday as a flurry of heavyweight candidates rushed to beat the registration deadline in the most unpredictable contest for decades. Iranian media reported that Rafsanjani - a relative moderate - had registered for the June 14 presidential election with just minutes to spare. His candidacy radically alters what was previously seen as a contest between rival conservative groups.
Pickaxe attacker kills one, injures four others in Milan
ROME (Reuters) - A Ghanaian immigrant in the northern Italian city of Milan killed one man and injured four others in a frenzied and apparently random attack with a pickaxe on Saturday, police said. Witnesses told SkyTG24 television that the man, who Italian media reports said was in Italy illegally, struck out at passersby in a residential district of the city early on Saturday morning.
Afghanistan says nine migrants killed by Iranian border guards
HERAT, Afghanistan (Reuters) - Iranian guards fired on a large group of Afghan migrants illegally crossing the border overnight, killing at least nine people, Afghan officials said on Saturday. Hostility to the U.S. role in Afghanistan, regional ambitions and an economy choked by Western sanctions have contributed to a tough Iranian policy against Afghan migrants who flee war and seek work in their more prosperous neighbor.
Egypt's Mubarak says too early to judge Mursi: newspaper
CAIRO (Reuters) - Former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak said it was too early to judge President Mohamed Mursi, saying the Islamist politician faced a difficult job, in comments billed as his first interview since his removal from power in 2011. El-Watan newspaper said its journalist broke through security lines to speak to Mubarak on Saturday before his retrial on charges of complicity in the death of protesters killed in the popular uprising that swept him from office.
Egypt says thwarts suicide attack on foreign embassy
CAIRO (Reuters) - Egyptian have security forces thwarted a plan by an al Qaeda-linked cell to carry out a suicide attack on a foreign embassy, capturing three militants, the interior minister said on Saturday. Mohamed Ibrahim said the men, who he accused of having links to militants in the Middle East and Pakistan, were found in possession of 10 kg (22 lb) of aluminium nitrate, which is used to make bombs.
Ethiopia arrests minister, 11 others over corruption
ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian police have arrested a minister and 11 other people on corruption charges, an official and state media said on Saturday, in the country's most high-profile swoop against graft for more than a decade. Businesses in the region regularly complain of corruption as an obstacle to their work. Transparency International ranked Ethiopia 113 out of 176 nations worldwide in its 2012 perception of corruption index, where No. 1 is considered least corrupt.
Italy's Berlusconi attacks judges but backs Letta government
ROME (Reuters) - Silvio Berlusconi launched a fierce attack on magistrates at a stormy political rally on Saturday, accusing them of trying to eliminate him politically but he pledged to keep supporting the fragile coalition of center-left Prime Minister Enrico Letta. The leader of Italy's center right, whose appeal against a tax fraud conviction was rejected this week and who still faces trial on charges of paying for sex with a minor, repeated his longstanding accusations against prosecutors.

Maryland Woman Shares Joys, Struggles Of Transition To ... - WAMU
By: Emily Berman // May 10, 2013
Twanda Washington, at home in Upper Marlboro, Md. with her 2-week old son, Patrick "PJ" Junior.
Twanda Washington is on the brink of motherhood, somewhere she never expected to be. In her early 40s, and a high-powered regional sales manager for AT&T, Washington wasn't exactly on the "mommy track." She'd accepted that she'd be the world's greatest aunt, and was content. But, just about 9 months ago, she and her fianc? Patrick Amos found themselves face to face with a positive pregnancy test. Washington and her family recorded an audio diary, inviting us in for the first few weeks of her son's new life.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama says Congress must give more homeowners the chance to refinance their mortgages to save money.
Obama says more than 2 million people are saving about $3,000 a year after restructuring their loans under his administration but that more deserve the same chance.
In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama also calls on the Senate to confirm "without delay" his choice of Democratic Rep. Mel Watt to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees government-controlled mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Obama says the North Carolina congressman helped enact rules to protect consumers from dishonest lenders.
In the Republican address, Alabama Rep. Martha Roby discusses legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House to give private-sector workers the right to trade overtime pay for additional time off.

Your iPad Smart Cover Could Switch Off a Pacemaker
S
The little magnets sure make the iPad's Smart Covers useful?but they could switch off pacemakers, too, if a new series of experiments is anything to go by.
When 14-year-old Gianna Chien set out on a science fair project earlier thus year, she decided to test if the magnets in the iPad Smart Cover were strong enough to interfere with implanted defibrillators. Testing her hypothesis on 26 participants she found that 30 percent of the time the magnets caused the devices to stop working. Since, she's started getting attention from medics?and soon she'll be reporting her findings to 8,000 doctors at a Heart Rhythm Society meeting in Denver.
They're certainly taking her research seriously. "The research offers a valuable warning for people with implanted defibrillators, which deliver an electric shock to restart a stopped heart," said John Day, head of heart-rhythm services at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, Utah. While the small magnets are relatively weak, they still seem to be able to interfere with the defibrillators. If a patient with a pacemaker were to fall asleep with an iPad Smart Cover on their chest, for instance, the device could be switched off. So be careful when you hand grandma your tablet. [Bloomberg]

Samsung No Longer Builds The Best Android Phones (GOOG)
It was profiled in Bloomberg Businessweek, the New York Times, and many other places.
Reader interest in Samsung was off the charts. Google search traffic for Samsung stories was huge, suggesting that normal people were anxious to learn more about its next big phone.
It's starting to look like that may have been a bit of a jinx.
Samsung is no longer making the best Android phones, according to our lead gadget reviewer Steve Kovach.
Samsung's Galaxy S4 is worse than the HTC One, per Kovach. He's not alone in his assessment. It was pretty much the consensus.?
And yesterday, Kovach said that the LG Optimus G Pro was better than Samsung's Galaxy Note II due to a sharper screen, better battery, and lower price.
Manufacturing the best phone doesn't mean selling the most phones. Apple's iPhone 5 was largely considered the best phone on the market, but it only has a sliver of the smartphone market's sales.
Samsung's rise wasn't about building the best smartphones, although it helped. Samsung's rise was fueled by a gigantic marketing budget, strong carrier distribution, and a willingness to experiment with different sized screens.
The fact that its phones are no longer considered the best on the market won't necessarily be its undoing. It's still has a strong brand name, a big marketing budget, and strong carrier distribution.
However, this could be the start of Samsung's lead weakening.
The competitive dynamics that threaten Apple apply even moreso to Samsung. It's not hard for an Android user to switch from phone to phone because the Android operating system is uniform. There isn't much keeping a Samsung user locked-in.
It won't happen overnight, but if reviews continue to roll in about superior products from rivals, Samsung's could lose its lead in the smartphone market.
Google's Motorola, HTC, and LG are all going to do their best to topple Samsung.
So far, they've made the first successful step by manufacturing a superior product.

Athletics still miffed about ninth-inning call
By TOM WITHERS
AP Sports Writer
Associated Press Sports
updated 10:09 a.m. ET May 9, 2013
CLEVELAND (AP) - Athletics manager Bob Melvin says he has been in contact with Major League Baseball regarding the disputed ninth-inning call in Wednesday night's game.
After watching a replay, umpires ruled the ball hit by Oakland's Adam Rosales with two outs was a double and not a game-tying homer. TV replays showed the ball cleared the 19-foot-high wall and struck a railing. Melvin does not know if the call will be overturned, but expects baseball officials to comment.
The Indians won 4-3 and Melvin was ejected by second-base umpire Angel Hernandez.
The manager said before Thursday's game he has not changed his mind, still certain Rosales' hit was a homer. He says the call "came down to somebody's decision and that was probably against the grain for what the majority thought."

While we largely enjoyed our time behind the wheel of the Tesla Model S, we clearly didn't have as much fun as Consumer Reports. The often stringent outlet just gave the EV sedan a 99 out of 100 rating, which makes it not just the publication's highest-ranked electric car, but its highest-ranked car... period. In particular, Tesla earned high marks for efficiency and quietness, as you'd expect, although CO is equally impressed with the Model S' performance and that inescapable 17-inch touchscreen. The review isn't uniformly positive, though: not surprisingly, the luxury pricing and inherent range limits prevent a flawless verdict. It's still a symbolic win for eco-friendly transport, however, and might help one Mr. Musk feel better about his pride and joy.

Lindsay Lohan Scores A Legal Victory And Settles Case With ...
It looks like Lindsay Lohan has one less thing to worry about as she adjusts to the rehab life!
LiLo was in the rare position of being on the GOOD side of some legal news, as she has apparently settled a lawsuit with injured paparazzo Grigor Balyan outside of court!
For those of you who need a refresher, the photographer sued the troubled starlet after her assistant ran over his foot while he was trying to snap some pics back in 2010!
OUCH!
It probably doesn?t help that he was standing in front of the car as they were trying to leave, but that?s a minor detail! LOLz! Grigor claimed he suffered some serious injuries and demanded justice to be served!
With Lindsay missing hearings left and right, it looked like the case would go on FOREVER! But the two have finally reached an agreement outside of court to make sure all of the paparazzo?s medical bills are paid off!
Well that wasn?t so hard, was it??
The best part about the deal is now LiLo can focus on getting clean with no one less distraction! Plus, now Grigor can get his newly repaired foot back in the door!
See? Everybody wins!

Restless legs syndrome, insomnia and brain chemistry: A tangled mystery solved?
Johns Hopkins researchers believe they may have discovered an explanation for the sleepless nights associated with restless legs syndrome (RLS), a symptom that persists even when the disruptive, overwhelming nocturnal urge to move the legs is treated successfully with medication.
Neurologists have long believed RLS is related to a dysfunction in the way the brain uses the neurotransmitter dopamine, a chemical used by brain cells to communicate and produce smooth, purposeful muscle activity and movement. Disruption of these neurochemical signals, characteristic of Parkinson's disease, frequently results in involuntary movements. Drugs that increase dopamine levels are mainstay treatments for RLS, but studies have shown they don't significantly improve sleep. An estimated 5 percent of the U.S. population has RLS.
The small new study, headed by Richard P. Allen, Ph.D., an associate professor of neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, used MRI to image the brain and found glutamate ? a neurotransmitter involved in arousal ? in abnormally high levels in people with RLS. The more glutamate the researchers found in the brains of those with RLS, the worse their sleep.
The findings are published in the May issue of the journal Neurology.
"We may have solved the mystery of why getting rid of patients' urge to move their legs doesn't improve their sleep," Allen says. "We may have been looking at the wrong thing all along, or we may find that both dopamine and glutamate pathways play a role in RLS."
For the study, Allen and his colleagues examined MRI images and recorded glutamate activity in the thalamus, the part of the brain involved with the regulation of consciousness, sleep and alertness. They looked at images of 28 people with RLS and 20 people without. The RLS patients included in the study had symptoms six to seven nights a week persisting for at least six months, with an average of 20 involuntary movements a night or more.
The researchers then conducted two-day sleep studies in the same individuals to measure how much rest each person was getting. In those with RLS, they found that the higher the glutamate level in the thalamus, the less sleep the subject got. They found no such association in the control group without RLS.
Previous studies have shown that even though RLS patients average less than 5.5 hours of sleep per night, they rarely report problems with excessive daytime sleepiness. Allen says the lack of daytime sleepiness is likely related to the role of glutamate, too much of which can put the brain in a state of hyperarousal ? day or night.
If confirmed, the study's results may change the way RLS is treated, Allen says, potentially erasing the sleepless nights that are the worst side effect of the condition. Dopamine-related drugs currently used in RLS do work, but many patients eventually lose the drug benefit and require ever higher doses. When the doses get too high, the medication actually can make the symptoms much worse than before treatment. Scientists don't fully understand why drugs that increase the amount of dopamine in the brain would work to calm the uncontrollable leg movement of RLS.
Allen says there are already drugs on the market, such as the anticonvulsive gabapentin enacarbil, that can reduce glutamate levels in the brain, but they have not been given as a first-line treatment for RLS patients.
RLS wreaks havoc on sleep because lying down and trying to relax activates the symptoms. Most people with RLS have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. Only getting up and moving around typically relieves the discomfort. The sensations range in severity from uncomfortable to irritating to painful.
"It's exciting to see something totally new in the field ? something that really makes sense for the biology of arousal and sleep," Allen says.
As more is understood about this neurobiology, the findings may not only apply to RLS, he says, but also to some forms of insomnia.
