West Ham beats Norwich 2-1 in Premier League

LONDON (AP) -West Ham beat Norwich 2-1 at Upton Park on Tuesday, handing the Canaries their fourth consecutive Premier League defeat.

The home side relied on first-half goals from Mark Noble and Joey O'Brien to secure the victory. Russell Martin scored a late consolation for Norwich.

Noble opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the third minute after referee Mark Clattenburg awarded West Ham a soft penalty when Ryan Bennett held on to Winston Reid.

In the 26th Noble became the architect, wriggling his way into the Norwich box. His cross was cleared, but fell to O'Brien who smashed the ball into the net.

Martin scored on a volley in the 90th but West Ham held on for the win.

The win moves West Ham ahead of Norwich into 11th place in the standings with 26 points. Norwich drops to 12th, one point behind.

Serena Williams wins at Brisbane; Sharapova out

BRISBANE, Australia (AP) ? Serena Williams carried her relentless form into the New Year with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Alize Cornet on Tuesday at the Brisbane International, where Maria Sharapova withdrew and two other highly ranked players went out in the second round.

After the unexpected exits of No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who pulled out with an injured right collarbone, and 2011 champion Petra Kvitova on Tuesday afternoon, the third-ranked Williams needed only an hour to beat the No. 44-ranked Cornet ? unleashing one of her fastest ever serves ? in the night match.

The 15-time major winner has lost only one of her last 34 competitive singles matches in a run that includes titles at Wimbledon, the London Olympics and the U.S. Open.

She was hitting winners so fiercely that Cornet didn't bother chasing most of them, and she fired a serve at 124 mph (200 kilometers per hour) in the fourth game of the second set.

"I just really went for it. I've hit 200 before, but they never go in so I was really excited that it went in," Williams said. "I tried to be more aggressive."

It was faster than any serve she produced last year, and she has rarely served any faster anywhere.

Not being able to serve was the reason for Sharapova's decision to withdraw. She didn't want to risk aggravating a collarbone problem that flared up late last month and forced her out of an exhibition in South Korea. She only started hitting overheads and serves on Monday, and said it was wiser to head to Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Open, starting on Jan. 14.

"I still have quite a bit of time to prepare for Australia. I'm on the right track, been training really well, so I just don't want to jeopardize what I've gained in the offseason so far," the French Open champion said. "Just have to make a smart move here."

Kvitova, who won the Brisbane title five months before claiming her first Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon in 2011, didn't find any rhythm in a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and will head to Sydney to get some more matches to prepare for the season's first major.

Combined with Daniela Hantuchova's 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 win over No. 5 Sara Errani and the first-round exits of No. 7 Sam Stosur and No. 8 Caroline Wozniacki, the season-opening event featuring eight of the top 10 ranked women had already lost five of its top eight seeds before the end of the second round.

"This tournament was a really tough draw, everybody's playing," Kvitova said of why so many of the highly ranked players have tumbled out. "After the offseason, it's hard to be on the court against some opponents."

Williams will next meet the winner of Wednesday's match between fellow American Sloane Stephens and Sweden's Sofia Arvidsson.

She said she had a touch of insomnia after arriving in Australia, and was awake listening to the New Year's Eve fireworks on Monday but not able to join the celebrations.

Now she's hoping for a night quarterfinal.

"I don't know what time zone I'm in. I don't know if I'm in Florida or if I'm in Mauritius or if I'm in Brazil. I just don't know anymore," she said, but "I'm good when I'm awake."

If she continues her dominating run right through the Australian Open, the 31-year-old Williams has a good chance of becoming the oldest player to hold the No. 1 ranking. Chris Evert holds that record ? she was 30 years, 11 months when she last held the top ranking in 1985. Williams puts her resurgence since her first-round exit at the last French Open to a feeling of reinvigoration.

"I just feel alive," she said. "I feel really alive."

On the men's side, local qualifier John Millman, ranked No. 199, advanced to a second-round match with Olympic and U.S. Open champion Andy Murray by beating Japan's Tatsuma Ito 6-4, 6-1.

Seventh-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria downed Denis Kudla of the U.S. 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, while No. 8 Martin Klizan of Slovakia lost 6-1, 6-2 to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan.

Spain's Tommy Robredo advanced 6-4, 7-6 (4) over American Ryan Harrison and Alejandro Falla of Colombia set up a second-round match with No. 3-seeded Gilles Simon with a 6-1, 7-6 (8) win over Jesse Levine.

Predicting more Balotelli drama

I?m really getting out there on this one, eh? Predicting more Mario Balotelli drama is like predicting that a whistle will sound prior to kickoff at a match.

The hook here is the ?where.? This drama will unfold at The City of Manchester Stadium in Manchester, England, also known as the Etihad Stadium, a.k.a. home of Manchester City. Because apparently the man-child and trouble-child striker isn?t going anywhere.

City boss Roberto Mancini says Balotelli is likely staying put in the upcoming transfer window. His reasoning: City owner Sheikh Mansour likes the guy. What Mancini just told Italy?s La Gazzetta dello Sport:

I think Mario will stay but the future depends mostly on him. Sheikh Mansour likes Balotelli because he recognizes the talent and he exports the name of the City over the world. ? We need to consider that Mario was made as a major investment, and this is not a club that throws its capital through the window.?

Mancini went on to say that the 22-year-old must become more professional in his career. No kidding.

While it?s true that 22 remains relatively young, and that we have seen immature athletes raise their level of professional comportment as they move along in age, there?s also a starting point to be considered.

That is to say, Balotelli?s starting point means he has a long, long way to go just to arrive at ?low-level problem? status. The young Italian has proven time and again to be petulant, impulsive, selfish and / or irresponsible on game day. So, if Mancini or Sheikh Mansour or anyone else truly believes sufficient progress will be made, and wants to risk City?s ongoing title defense on it, well, shame on them.

Because you know what they say about the fooling someone once, fooling them twice, etc.

Stock index futures up as 'cliff' talks go on

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Stock futures rose on Monday, setting up Wall Street to snap a five-session losing streak as talks continued in Washington over resolving the "fiscal cliff".

* Negotiations were set to continue on Monday between lawmakers and the White House on how to deal with the $600 billion in automatic tax hikes and spending cuts that kick in at the start of January and could drag the economy in recession.

* The Senate reconvenes on Monday after the open of equity trading with only hours to find some sort of stop-gap deal that would also have to be passed by the House of Representatives.

* Despite the gains in futures market, stocks still could fall on Monday when the cash markets open if there is no sign lawmakers are making progress.

* While hope for a broad deal has largely evaporated, the lack of panic on markets shows that investors still expect officials to find a solution to the budget problems early in the New Year. The measures that kick in on January 1 will have only a gradual impact.

* While midnight on Monday marks the deadline for a deal, the government can pass legislation in 2013 that retroactively prevents the United States going over the fiscal cliff, an option that is viewed as politically easier.

* S&P 500 futures rose 3 points and were above fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures added 25 points, while Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 2 points.

* European markets were slightly down on Monday morning, although trading was muted as markets in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, Norway, and Sweden were closed while UK, French, Dutch and Spanish markets were only open for half a session. <.eu/>

* U.S. stocks dropped on Friday, with significant losses in the last minutes of trading, as prospects for a deal worsened at the beginning of the weekend.

* The S&P 500 closed at 1,402.43 at 4 p.m. ET on Friday, down 1.1 percent, but futures continued to fall before closing 15 minutes later with a loss of 1.9 percent. S&P futures and the S&P cash index do not match point-by-point, but the size of the disparity on Monday points to a weak opening in stocks.

* On Sunday, President Barack Obama, appearing on NBC's "Meet the Press," said investors could begin to show greater concerns in the new year.

* Investors have remained relatively sanguine about the process, believing it will eventually be solved. In the past two months markets have not shown the kind of volatility that was present during the fight to raise the debt ceiling in 2011.

* Rather, equities have largely performed well in the last two months despite constant chatter about the fiscal cliff, though the last few days shows a bit of increased worry. The Dow industrials and the S&P 500 each lost 1.9 percent last week, after stocks fell for five straight sessions, which marked the S&P 500's longest losing streak in three months.

* The CBOE Volatility Index <.vix> rose to its highest level since June on Friday, closing at 22.72.

Israel indicts former foreign minister Lieberman

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli far-right leader Avigdor Lieberman was charged on Sunday with fraud and breach of trust, allegations that prompted his resignation as foreign minister two weeks ago, justice officials said.

Lieberman, who has denied the accusations, remains head of the Yisrael Beitenu party that has formed a coalition with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing Likud party ahead of a January 22 parliamentary election.

Israeli justice officials said Lieberman was indicted on charges relating to the promotion of an Israeli diplomat who had illegally given him information about a police investigation against him.

Under Israeli law, conviction on the fraud and breach of trust charges could disqualify Lieberman from holding a cabinet post in the next government.

Lieberman, who lives in a Jewish settlement in the occupied West Bank, has stoked controversy by questioning the loyalties of Israel's 1.5 million Arab citizens.

His comments have drawn accusations of racism but have also given him a large electoral following beyond his Russian-speaking base.

Earlier this month, he angered the European Union by saying it had not sufficiently condemned calls by Hamas Islamists for Israel's destruction, likening this to Europe's failure to stop Nazi genocide against Jews during World War Two.

The European Union foreign policy chief called the comments offensive and reiterated the bloc's commitment to Israel's security.

Born in Moldova, Lieberman emigrated to Israel in 1978. He became administrative head of the Likud party in 1993 and ran the prime minister's office from 1996 to 1997 during Netanyahu's first term. He left and formed Yisrael Beitenu in 1999.

Lieberman is the latest in a string of Israeli politicians to face corruption charges in recent years. Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert resigned in 2008 after being indicted, though he has since been acquitted of most of the charges against him.

Bent Outlet Cover -?Problem: I want an outlet right where the wall is angled, but I can't get the cover plate to fit.

Solution: Cut the cover plate and then caulk it in place.

Worst Common Vent Ever -?How can you get four water heaters to backdraft at the same time? ?Just do something like this.

Outlet in duct -?Moving the outlet would have been too much work, so someone just cut a hole in the exhaust duct for the kitchen hood fan. ?Nice touch with the masking tape on the sharp sheet metal edges too.

Furnace covers reversed -?furnace manufacturers intentionally make it?impossible?extremely difficult to get the upper and lower covers reversed. ?With enough tenacity, one can make it happen though. ?This allows most of the air to get sucked from the furnace room, completely bypassing the furnace filter. ?No wonder the furnace filter was so clean.

Deteriorated Chimney?- Flue gases from combustion appliances like furnaces and water heaters are corrosive; that's why you see a metal liner sticking out of most chimneys in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. ?When the appliance vents in to the chimney without a liner, the flue gases often condense near the top and then drip down and destroy the inside of the chimney.

This is also just one more reason why it's important for the home inspector to get on the roof whenever possible.

Optional Combustion Air -?Have you ever had one of those days where you felt... y'know... a little too fresh? ?Thanks to this person's nifty invention, the combustion air being pumped in to the furnace return plenum can be manually turned off.

Leaking Drain -?Awww, isn't that cute? ?We noticed a bunch of water on the floor in the basement after testing all of the first floor plumbing fixtures. ?To confirm the source of the leak, we filled up the kitchen sink with water, pulled the drain stopper, then ran downstairs to catch the leak in action.

TwoFur -?Early attempts at one-piece kitchen faucet / sprayer combos failed miserably.

Leaning Porch?- no photo editing performed here.

Leaves in Attic -?this huge piles of leaves in the attic was a mystery.

Not-so-frost-free faucet -?Frost free faucets?have a long stem that allows the water to be turned off?inside?the home, preventing them from freezing. ?It doesn't work so well when they're installed like this.

Missing Roof Vent -?Nice solution.

This deck puts the?can't?in Cantilever -?The word of the day is 'fulcrum'. ?Now, everyone over to the right for a demonstration.?

Medusa's House -?we think we know where she lives.

Obstructed Vacuum Breaker -?Over/under on how long it will be before that?vacuum breaker?is removed after the Bloomington inspector leaves: 9.5 seconds.

Scorched 'Safer Cooking' Manual -?Alanis Morissette would love this photo. ??Dontcha think?

Strategic Bath Fan Placement -?this gives new meaning to the term 'point source ventilation'.

Worst. ?Roof. ?Ever.

Exploding Range -?what happens when you take a range designed for natural gas and install it in a home with LP gas? ?You create an explosion hazard. ??DO NOT test the oven if you ever come across this defect - a huge fireball will shoot out when you open the door, which will singe your hair and give you half a heart attack. ?Don't ask us how we know.

My crawl space has a flat tire -?we couldn't believe our eyes when we found this trailer frame partially buried in concrete in a crawl space, supporting the addition at the front of a house in Hopkins.

Men make things fit?-?We've seen plenty of doors notched out to get around toilets, but this might be the worst one yet.
