SALISBURY - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is coming to Salisbury in September to support Pat McCrory's campaign for governor of North Carolina.

Christie will attend a 'Carolina Comeback' rally for the former Charlotte mayor at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, McCrory's campaign announced this afternoon. The event will be held at Catawba College, where McCrory graduated with degrees in education and political science.

"Governor Christie is a strong, inspirational and visionary leader who is not afraid of telling people the truth and treating people like adults," McCrory said in a press release. "Unfortunately, while other governors from around the country have been showing leadership and implementing reforms, North Carolina has had a bystander in the governor's office. I look forward to having Governor Christie with me on the campaign trail to talk about the kind of strong leadership and vision we need in the governor's office to start a Carolina comeback."

Christie will also attend a Charlotte fundraiser for the McCrory campaign on Sept. 13. Campaign officials said more scheduling details will be coming.

Christie raised money for McCrory's campaign in November in Greensboro.

Christie also delivered Tuesday's keynote speech at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., which McCrory did not attend.

According to the Associated Press, McCrory has said he originally planned to go to the convention for one day but decided to spend time campaigning in western North Carolina.

Egypt president in Iran for first visit in decades

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi arrived in Tehran on Thursday in the first visit by an Egyptian leader to Iran in decades.

The Egyptian president was attending a summit of the Nonaligned Movement, and is supposed to transfer leadership of the 120-nation bloc to Tehran.

Iran's state TV in a live broadcast showed Morsi being received by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the summit conference hall in Tehran.

Tehran cut diplomatic relations in 1979 because of Egypt's peace accord with Israel. Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has considered Israel as its arch foe.

Iran's leadership welcomed the 2011 uprising in Egypt that ultimately brought Morsi, an Islamist, to the presidency.

Representatives from more than 100 countries are attending.

Tehran has an ambitious agenda for the summit, including the launching of a peace effort including Egypt, Iran, and three other countries to help resolve the crisis in its key regional ally, Syria. But anti-regime fighters have dismissed any role for Iran in a plan they and some others say has little hope of succeeding.

Iran is also using the summit to counter U.S. claims that it has been isolated over its nuclear program. The West says Iran is trying to develop weapons while Tehran says the program is for peaceful purposes.

Something To Work For [Closed]

Married life was not as easy as she'd thought it was going to be. It was barely seven am and Amanda was awake once again to feed their newborn son, Jamie, who at only a few weeks old was still waking constantly - every two to three hours, for a feed and leaving her only to feel exhausted. She loved being a new mother, a wife, a secretary, and everything else that she was currently, but what she would do for some much needed rest right now. And here she was, sitting in the rocking chair, letting her son feed while she attempted not to fall asleep.

She loved her son and her husband, but lately things had been more strained than before between them. They had been getting more distant it seemed by the day. The fights were becoming regular things. Mandy smiled slightly as she remembered the days at the start of their relationship. They'd met through being childhood neighbours and looking back now, as she had done for a while, she believed that it was love at first sight. She was such a romantic. They'd seen each other for a while after finally getting together before making the commitment and getting married - which, apart from the day her son was born, it was the best day of her life. They'd been married just over two years now, but it wasn't the happily ever after that she had imagined it to be. And the honeymoon period in the relationship was definitely over.

Jamie finished feeding and Mandy moved him back into the cot in his nursery. There was no point in going back to sleep now. Though she was still on maternity leave, Mandy was eager to use this time off to sort out there medium sized townhouse. They both had busy lives and sometimes she felt that the house got neglected because of this. They'd fallen into the typical married routine, sharing the same bed, the same kitchen of a morning and night, before parting separate ways to go to work for the day, only to come home tired and in Mandy's case, often cranky. Maybe sorting out the house was what she needed to do as a way to relax and get her head together. And it would give her time to think of what she should say to her husband. They needed to talk. They couldn't go on like this forever. Not unless they wanted the marriage to fail. And she'd confided in her mother. Her mother who appeared to be interfering and sitting on her high horse commenting and looking down on most people. Maybe she was right though, maybe marriage counselling was what they needed.

Shaking her head, she checked on Jamie once more before heading downstairs to make herself a cup of coffee. First things first. She'd make the coffee to keep awake while she tackled the bookcase. Mandy loved reading and collecting books and though she never had time to read much anymore, she continued to buy them. They were overflowing from the bookcase now. There were some that were her husbands, but her pile outweighed his pile. While she could she'd get rid of the ones she'd never read or wouldn't read again. Make some space in the house for when Jamie got on his hands and knees and eventually his feet.

And that was what her Sunday morning would entail. Piling up her vast book collection and taking care of Jamie.

Pets get refuge from Hurricane Isaac - San Antonio Express-News

Hurricane Katrina brought us a more than a few lessons seven years ago. Because of the images of dogs and cats abandoned on rooftops and cars when New Orleans flooded, public outrage fueled new laws and launched emergency planning efforts that now include pets. During that storm, rescuers refused to take pets, leaving many people who refused to leave their pets behind stranded on rooftops themselves.

Here?s a story of a 70-year man being rescued along with his four dogs, ?a stark difference,? says the reporter, from seven years ago.

Prior to Hurricane Isaac coming ashore, animal shelters were already working together to evacuate Louisiana and Mississippi shelters. The Louisiana SPCA in New Orleans sent 181 animals to the SPCA of Texas ? 87 cats and 60 dogs. The SPCA of Texas also took in another 34 cats from the Humane Society in Gulfport, Mississippi. The SPCA of Texas has a ?Memorandum of Understanding? with these groups that provides for mutual assistance should disaster strike. They had a 50% off adoption event too to help make room at the shelter for all these additional animals.

In anticipation of Hurricane Isaac, the ASPCA? (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals?) also picked up 27 dogs from the Humane Society of South Mississippi in Gulfport, Miss., to drive to the Humane Society of Broward County in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

?As we approach the exact anniversary of Katrina?s landfall just seven years later, we have learned many lessons,? said Tara High, executive director of the Humane Society of South Mississippi. ?One of the lessons was to have a plan?and have partnering shelters and organizations on our side, ready to help if ever we need it. We know that our planning and our partnerships mean less lives are lost and happier endings for displaced shelter animals.?

Until the state facility opens to take care of evacuee pets, a Shreveport veterinarian has offered to help out by taking in evacuee pets for free. This entry was posted in Uncategorized, pets and tagged Hurricane Isaac, pets, Texas. Bookmark the permalink.

Is Android doomed in the wake of the Apple v. Samsung verdict? Not a chance

There have been?rumblings in some corners of the tech press that Google (GOOG) ought to be quaking in its boots in the wake of the Apple (AAPL) v.?Samsung (005930) patent verdict because it could give Apple enough juice to take out Android all together. This is highly unlikely to ever happen for a multitude of reasons, but the most important is that Google has a lot of money, a lot of creative and talented people, and a lot of incentive to make sure that Android remains successful.

First of all, let?s acknowledge that Samsung?s loss in the patent trial against Apple was more about its own mistakes than Google?s, since half of the patents successfully asserted by Apple were design patents that had nothing to do with Android and were only about Samsung?s hardware choices.

Yes, the jury also found that the Google-designed Nexus S infringed on two of the remaining patents that dealt with software, but only one of those patents ? the ?915 patent that deals with pinch-to-zoom and one-fingered scrolling on iOS devices ? seems consequential to Android?s core functionality. The other patent ? the ?381 patent that covers the bouncy ?rubber band? effect that occurs when scrolling on Apple devices ? does not. And as 9to5Google?notes, Google claims to have fixed both of these infringements with the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Couple this with the fact that Google allegedly warned Samsung that it was walking on thin ice with some of its design concepts for its tablets and you get the impression that Samsung was a uniquely rich target for Apple?s legal team to exploit. This is unlikely to be replicated with every other Android vendor. Indeed, Apple?s own attorneys at the trial pointed to the Android-based Sony (SNE)?Xperia arc as a smartphone that had a unique design and that wasn?t a direct copy of Apple?s iPhone, so Apple does acknowledge to some extent that Android isn?t a complete ripoff of its own operating system.

That said, this is not the time for Google to kick up its feet and sip a martini. Android manufacturers such as HTC (2498) and LG (066570), which don?t have deep pockets like Samsung does, will undoubtedly be nervous and will need reassurance that their best devices won?t get similarly clobbered in the near future. To accomplish this, Google may want to take a much more hands-on approach with manufacturers. It can work with them to make sure their hardware doesn?t take liberally from Apple?s designs, and also to provide them with direct legal help during patent suits ? something it was reluctant to do during the Samsung trial.

Google also might consider going back through Android to figure out which features are most vulnerable to intellectual property claims and alter them to lessen the likelihood of more Android-related patent litigation. At the same time, Google also will likely want to continue bolstering its own IP portfolio either through acquisitions such as the Motorola deal or through filing more original patents of its own to scare off potential plaintiffs.

While this is all easier said than done, Google has the resources, the talent and the incentive to do it.

Let?s start with the resources and the talent: Simply put, Google plugs a whole lot of its money into research and development and it encourages its developers to think really big, whether it?s creating a high-speed fiber network in Kansas City or creating ?smart glasses? that beam images from the web directly to users? eyeballs.

While not all of Google?s experiments have been successes ? yes, I?m looking at you, Nexus Q ? the company puts out so many different products that its Chromes, Androids and Gmails are more likely to be remembered than its assorted failures. Or put another way, Google has shown it has the creative energy and financial flexibility to keep innovating despite past failures.

Now let?s look at the incentives: Google knew exactly what it was doing when it launched Android as an open-source mobile operating system in 2007. The company knew that location-based advertising was about to become an enormous market in the smartphone era and was determined to get its own software and services out to as many mobile devices as possible. There?s simply no way that Google will allow Apple and its walled-garden devices to dominate a realm that is essential to the future of its business.

And besides, it isn?t as though manufacturers have an obvious alternative to Android that will guarantee them healthy revenues going forward, as Nokia (NOK) has shown that manufacturing solely for Windows Phone won?t magically improve market share. The fact is that many manufacturers need Android just as much as Android needs them.

Gas prices rise as refineries shut for Isaac

The price of oil fell Monday, Aug. 27, 2012, as the threat to production from Tropical Storm Isaac appeared to lessen and traders speculated about a release of oil from U.S. reserves. (AP Photo/Danny Johnston)

(AP) ? Pump prices are heading higher as Tropical Storm Isaac forces several major refineries along the Gulf Coast to halt production in preparation for high winds and heavy rains.

Fear of reduced gasoline supplies sent wholesale gasoline prices up 7.7 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $3.155 per gallon Monday. The average retail price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. rose to $3.75 on Monday, and it could pass $3.80 by Labor Day weekend, says Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

Oil fell Monday because Gulf Coast refineries won't be using as much in the next few days and damage to key oil and gas operations in the Gulf of Mexico seemed less likely as the storm's winds aren't expected to be as strong as some had feared.

Refineries should also escape damage. But refinery owners often shut down operations in advance of a storm. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electric power and generate steam to cook crude oil into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and heating oil. If a refinery loses power suddenly, operators can't properly clear the partially cooked oil out of pipes, and re-starting the refinery can take several days or even weeks.

If refineries instead conduct what is known as an orderly shutdown, they can re-start as soon as the power supply is assured again. The Gulf refineries will likely stay off line for about three days.

About 1 million barrels per day of refining capacity is expected to be shut down, roughly half of the refining capacity in the potential path of the storm. The U.S. consumes about 19 million barrels of oil products per day.

Marathon Petroleum Corp. said it is shutting down its Garyville, La. refinery. The refinery has the capacity to refine 490,000 barrels of oil per day, making it the third largest refinery in the U.S. Phillips 66 is closing its 247,000 barrel per day refinery in Belle Chasse, La. Chevron Corp. is keeping its 330,000-barell per day Pascagoula, Miss. plant running as of Monday afternoon.

The National Hurricane Center now predicts Isaac will grow to a Category 1 hurricane instead of a Category 2. A Category 1 hurricane has winds ranging from 74 mph to 95 mph.

"The production centers in the Gulf can withstand those low-level hurricanes," said Gene McGillian, oil analyst for Tradition Energy.

About one-quarter of the nation's oil is produced in the Gulf of Mexico. As of Monday afternoon, about 80 percent of Gulf oil production was suspended, according to the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement. Companies have evacuated 346 oil and gas production platforms and 41 drilling rigs.

Benchmark oil fell 68 cents to end the day at $95.47 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude dropped $1.33 to $112.26 on the ICE Futures exchange.

There was renewed speculation that the Obama administration will release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, the nation's emergency stockpile of oil. The White House has said a release is one option for combatting higher oil prices. Benchmark U.S. oil has risen 22 percent since late June. Brent crude, which is used to price international blends that many U.S. refineries use to make gasoline, is up 23 percent in the same period.

Gasoline prices have risen in recent weeks because of the higher oil prices and refinery problems in the Midwest and West Coast. At $3.75, the national average is at its highest level since May 9 and it is up about 42 cents from the low reached on July 2.

Analyst and oil trader Stephen Schork said in a daily newsletter that gasoline could rise as high as $3.90 by early October, increasing the odds that the administration will tap the SPR in an effort to bring down oil and gasoline prices.

Oil was previously released from the SPR to offset price spikes due to the loss of oil production in Libya last year and after Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf Coast in 2005.

But if oil production and refinery operations can quickly resume after the storm passes, gasoline prices could soon fall on their own.

Kloza predicts that gasoline will begin to fall after Labor Day ? if another storm doesn't affect supplies ? as refiners switch to cheaper blends of gasoline and the summer driving season winds down. He expects retail prices to fall 20 to 40 per gallon cents in the next several weeks, and he thinks they could be well below $3.50 per gallon by early November.

In other energy trading:

--Natural gas fell 5 cents to $2.65 per 1,000 cubic feet. The government estimated that about 48 percent of Gulf natural gas production has been suspended due to the storm.

--Heating oil rose less than a penny to $3.11 a gallon.

Once upon a baby shower?

Today was a happy day.

I drove to Orlando to celebrate the pending arrival of baby Lexi.

IMG_0067.JPG

Hard to believe it?s been two years since I attended the wedding of Christie and Mat, or that they are now expecting their first baby. Where does the time go? I?m so happy for both of them. They are going to be wonderful parents, Lexi doesn?t know just how lucky she is. :)

It was almost like a mini-elementary-school reunion at the shower. Can you believe I?ve known some of these girls for 20+ years?!

IMG_0021.JPG

Aimee was in the same kindergarten class with my brother, Christie and I met in sixth grade, Shannan and I go back to fifth grade, and Kira and I were both in Mrs. Perry?s kindergarten class. My pre-teen and teen years were filled with Friday night movie dates (where our parents dropped us off and we enjoyed a $1.25 slice of pizza before hand), sleep overs galore, shopping adventures, and so much more ? all with this group of girls. They are my oldest group of friends and I only wish I got to see them more.

IMG_0022.JPG

Now one of us is having a baby and our little group of girls is expanding as we eagerly welcome in one more.

The shower was lovely. Christie?s mom did a wonderful job putting the party together.

IMG_0004.JPG

Love the spread of Publix party trays ? you can NEVER go wrong with Publix party trays!

IMG_0005.JPG

My plate (+more fruit)

IMG_0006.JPG

The desserts!

IMG_0017.JPG

I had some of the cookies that Shannan?s mom made ? DELICIOUS!

There were games that involved baby food.

IMG_0009.JPG

You had to try a bite, then guess what it was.

IMG_0008.JPG

I was all set to partake, but after watching Mat take a bite, then seeing him immediately run to the sink, I politely declined. I?m not that adventurous.

IMG_0013.JPG

Next, were melted candy bars.

IMG_0015.JPG

I got all three right ? Kit Kat, Twix and Reeses ? BOOYAH! #CandyBarAddict

IMG_0016.JPG

Present time!

IMG_0025.JPG

Adorbs.

IMG_0033.JPG

Loved this, too. Mat?s sister bought a few sizes so she has back-ups for when she outgrows the newborn size.

IMG_0035.JPG

I bought a few outfits (+diapers!). Next time I need to dig out the arts and crafts ? the personal gifts are always the ones that mean the most.

IMG_0051.JPG

I can?t wait to meet little Lexi in October. She will be one well dressed, well loved kid.

Congrats Mat and Christie!

Since I was in their neck of the woods, I decided to drive to my parents? house and crash for the night. Dad promised pork roast for dinner, and who am I to ever turn down dad?s home cooking?!

IMG_0120.JPG

Oh, and there was a little surprise waiting at home.

Meet the newest member of the Anderson household!

Details to come in the morning!

Obama declares emergency in Louisiana

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana as that state prepares for Tropical Storm Isaac.

The White House said Obama informed Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (JIN'-dul) of the emergency declaration in a phone call Monday. The declaration makes federal funding available for emergency activities related to the storm. Obama also spoke with Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley, Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (LAN'-droo).

Obama has asked the Federal Emergency Management Agency to coordinate disaster relief efforts with state and local officials along the Gulf Coast.

Forecasters predict Isaac will intensify into a Category 1 hurricane later Monday or Tuesday, with a projected path directly toward New Orleans on Wednesday. Isaac could become the first hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast since 2008.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) ? A raucous crowd cheered native son Paul Ryan on Monday as he prepared to accept the Republican Party's vice presidential nomination. He pledged to take the values of his family's longtime hometown to the White House.

Ryan, a congressman from Wisconsin whose district includes his Janesville hometown, arrived in the gymnasium of the high school where he cheered classmates more than two decades ago to signs welcoming "Paul Ryan: The Pride of Janesville" and two minutes of solid applause. Several times he recognized faces and waved.

"Everywhere I look, I see friends, I see community leaders, I see family members," he said in this town of about 63,000.

The send-off was a local-boy-done-good tribute and a preview of what aides said would be his message to the thousands of delegates gathered in Tampa, Fla., for the convention ? and the millions of voters who will look at him for the first time when he accepts the nomination and addresses the convention Wednesday night.

"We have a big choice to make. We're not just picking the next president for a few years. We are picking the pathway for America for a generation," Ryan said. "And what Mitt Romney and I pledge is to make sure that you get to choose: What kind of country do we want to have? What kind of people do we want to be?"

While the audience was friendly, Romney's first few weeks in the spotlight as running mate to GOP presidential candidate Romney brought new scrutiny to House Republican budget proposals he authored, and specifically to his idea to transform Medicare for future generations. Looking to soften Democrats' criticisms that the GOP would end the health care program for seniors, Ryan cited local civic groups such as food banks who help neighbors in need.

"What we do in our communities is we look out for one another. That's what governing can't replace or displace," he said. "You know, they call it civil society. I call it Janesville, Wis."

The rally took on the tone of an extended family reunion at times, with Ryan's brother introducing him. The prideful audience held signs proclaiming "Wisconsin Believes" and "Romney-Ryan."

Former state Sen. Ted Kanavas recalled bumping into Ryan around town and asked the crowd how many others had run into the congressman at the grocery or video store. The room erupted with applause.

"Paul is an accessible person who you can walk up to and talk to. That's the Paul we know and that's the Paul we're sharing with the country," Kanavas said, ignoring the fact that easy access to Ryan would disappear if Romney is elected.

"So from everyone in Janesville: Paul, we support you, we are with you and we are wishing you a great convention. Keep doing us proud," he continued to cheers.

Aides said Monday that Ryan would head to Florida on Tuesday, a day later than expected.

GOP officials trimmed the convention by a day, to three days, because of the threat from Tropical Storm Isaac, which had veered away from Tampa and was headed out over the Gulf of Mexico on Monday. It was expected to become a hurricane and possibly hit the Gulf region late Tuesday.

Ryan mentioned Isaac once during the rally, saying his hopes and prayers are with "those still standing in the path of the storm."

How To Get Started In Commercial Real Estate : simsadler.net

Getting involved in commercial real estate can overwhelm and stress out beginners and veterans alike. Read this article to find out how you can approach a transaction efficiently, and stay in control of the situation with less stress.

If you plan on investing in commercial real estate, you should consider the tax benefits you will receive. Not only are there interest deductions, but also depreciation benefits to be aware of. There is a chance that an investor may receive money that must be taxed, but does not come in the form of cash; this is known as phantom income. You should be mindful of phantom income prior to investing.

It is important to be aware of all of the environmental issues and obligations related to your property. For example, hazardous waste materials are a major red flag for any property. It?s up to you to be aware of the issues, fix them, and have them inspected once complete.

Create a reputation of being an expert by starting a blog on your website. This assists in locating people to buy or lease your property.

When searching for a real estate agent, keep their disclosures in mind so you know who they are working for. Dual agency is a possibility that you need to be aware of. When dual agency exists, the agency advocates for both parties in the transaction. This means the agency works for the tenant and the landlord at the same time. If this is the case, and the agent is a dual agent, this should be known to both parties and agreed to by both parties.

When choosing between two similar commercial properties, think large scale. Acquiring enough money to finance a 10 or 20 unit apartment complex can be huge undertaking. Also, purchasing more units is like buying in bulk. The more you buy, the cheaper each unit will be.

Don?t ever underestimate the value of the relation between you and lenders, be them private or investors. Many commercial properties are bought and sold without ever going on the open market. Having many people in your address book increases the chance that you are exposed to such deals.

You may wish to focus your efforts on only one property type at a time. Regardless of whether your real estate investment is a office, apartment complex, or undeveloped commercial land, it is important to concentrate your efforts on only one investment. Each type deserves and requires undivided attention. Becoming a guru in one investment category is preferable to minimal success spread across multiple investments.

Looking for that perfect piece of commercial property can seem like an endless journey, with much to learn for even the most experienced buyers. In this article, you will find plenty of tips and tricks to give you an enjoyable and easy search for the commercial property you need.

13-year-old charged in Milwaukee fatal hit-and-run car accident ...

The death of a 57-year-old Milwaukee man struck by a hit-and-run driver as he was riding his bicycle in Milwaukee has resulted in four felony charges being brought against a 13-year-old-girl.

The girl was driving a stolen auto when she struck the cyclist. At the time, she was drag racing teenagers who were also driving a stolen vehicle. The girl told authorities that she did not see the victim. He was riding his bicycle to work at the time of the hit-and-run accident. Failure to see an obstruction, vehicle or pedestrian can be the result of a distracted driver, such as might occur when racing another vehicle; and is most certainly the act of a negligent driver. Novel legal issues arise from the liability and insurance questions.

The estate and /or family of the deceased victim have the right to recover for their losses. Those rights are against any person or persons who were negligent and whose negligence was the cause of the losses claimed. Negligence, under Wisconsin law is conduct that falls short of what a reasonable person would do to protect another individual from foreseeable risks or harm

The 13-year-old driver was clearly at fault, however, will insurance obtained by the owner of the stolen vehicle be available to cover the loss? The driver was not licensed; the car was stolen. Although the legal issues are both novel and interesting, without knowledgeable, experienced guidance, the family of the deceased may be facing an economic tragedy in addition to the emotional tragedy they have already suffered.
