I love a good bash, or should I say party; it?s the idea of?unbridled?eating and drinking with family and friends that is so captivating??.chinking glasses and lots of laughter, sly seconds of that tasty tart and maybe a little slice of that attractive looking cake?..more sausage rolls than can fill a supermarket shopping bag and lots of gorgeous little snacky things. Then there?s the ?party? music, usually compilations from some?forgotten?era??jiving bodies and buxom buttocks vie for?position?amongst tables that are filled with?discarded?plates and crumpled napkins ? it?s ?mad, it?s bad and it?s TOTALLY wonderful! It?s even better if you have been invited, no washing up or wine glass collecting, just idle gossip, a buffet the size of?Bournemouth?and?titillating?cocktails??and then a sleepy lift home to fluffy pillows and fluffy beds! Well, now that?s all over, let me introduce you to my last party??or parties, as THREE of these?raucous?Raclette?and Pancake parties have taken place recently, the best one being at my sisters, where we needed to add a wallpaper table to?accommodate?the machine and all the food!

So what exactly is a Raclette??The name ?Raclette? refers to a meal and to a type of cheese with the same name. The traditional dish can be described as melted cheese eaten with boiled potatoes, served with small gherkins and pickled onions, as well as assorted charcuterie. I am famous for my raclette parties and I am sorry to say that many a party has ended with people staying the night, unbeknown to me until next morning, and molten cheese being soldered to the tablecloth ? hence my?insistence?for paper covers or a proper French oil cloth now, as seen in the photos! You can sit at the table for hours, cooking and chatting, and drinking, and melting cheese?..it?s tactile, it?s?unique?and it?s a wonderful way to sit down with family and?friends?rather?than slaving over a hot?oven?- they can all slave over a hot grill?instead! You can host themed raclette evenings, I held a fish and seafood one once, with scallops, prawns, small pieces of fresh?salmon?and smoked?salmon?on the table, with?fresh?blini batter??and caviar ? it was held on New Year?s?Eve?and was a fabulous meal?..I had all the appropriate?trimmings?on the side, and we even scrambled?our own eggs on top of the machine too. But for summer, if we have one, take the machine outside and hook it up to an extension lead and offer all the list of ingredients above?but?with fresh peppers, olives, chunks of feta cheese, halloumi and little cherry tomatoes.

House rejects bid to slash rural airline subsidies

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House has turned back an attempt by a tea party-backed GOP conservative to slash taxpayer subsidies for air service to isolated smaller cities and towns that can cost hundreds of dollars a ticket.

The 238-164 vote late Tuesday killed a bid by Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., to slash the Essential Air Service program, which subsidizes flights to 120 communities in 35 states in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico and 43 towns in Alaska.

The vote came as the House debated a $107 billion transportation spending bill for the budget year beginning Oct. 1.

Republicans controlling the House had voted to eliminate the oft-criticized program last year while they considered renewing federal aviation programs, but a coalition of Democrats and Republicans representing rural America reversed the move in the Senate.

Despite modest changes to the program enacted earlier this year, its budget now would reach a new high ? to $214 million ? under Tuesday's legislation. McClintock's amendment would have eliminated $114 million in direct taxpayer subsidies; he was blocked under House rules from attacking $100 million in subsidies automatically financed by "overflight" fees paid by aircraft that fly over the U.S. but don't take off or land here.

"This is about the easiest choice the House could possibly make, to put an end to the so-called Essential Air Service that lavishly subsidizes some of the least essential air services in the country," McClintock said. "Rural life has both great advantages and disadvantages, and it is not the job of hardworking taxpayers who choose to live elsewhere to level out the differences."

The program awards contracts, usually worth between $1 million and $2 million a year, to subsidize airlines that serve airports such as Altoona, Pa., Paducah, Ky., and Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Such subsidies can be quite modest, but can reach hundreds of dollars each way on a round-trip ticket from places like Ironwood in Michigan's Upper Peninsula or several towns in Montana.

The changes enacted earlier require that subsidized routes must average at least 10 passengers a day if they are to be renewed when current contracts are up, and new communities are blocked from receiving the subsidies. Last year, Congress prohibited subsidies from exceeding $1,000 a passenger. The savings from such steps will take a while to take hold but are likely to prove modest.

Supporters of the subsidies say having access to air service is crucial to the economies of rural towns.

"This program plays a key role in the economic development in many rural communities by ensuring that air service continues," said Rep. Tom Latham, R-Iowa.

In fact, the wide reach of the program contributes to the sweeping support it gets, both from Democrats but also from conservative Republicans who suspend their anti-big-government rhetoric when their districts are affected.

The reality of strategic workforce planning

Here are a few things about strategic workforce planning that will give you a better understanding of it in the workplace today.

• In a?study from i4cp, only 22 percent of organizations said they engaged in strategic workforce planning.
• 36 percent of organizations engage in tactical workforce planning (staffing plans, budget reconciliation and training schedules), which typically look out no more than a year.
• 52 percent of organizations do operational workforce planning (headcount forecasting, scheduling/coverage and staffing requisitions), which typically looks out weeks or months and is the most basic form.
• Only 37 percent of respondents said that their organization had a person who is dedicated full-time to workforce planning as a leader.

Although these statistics are low the trend is up and more companies are increasing their efforts in strategic workforce planning. If you want your organization to succeed, you can?t take a limited view of workforce planning (or talent management as a whole). The most successful companies are continuously executing strategic workforce planning; it is not something done once a year or only looked at as an HR function.

According to Bersin and Associates research, organizations that practice advanced workforce planning had on average 28 percent higher impact scores in efficiency, effectiveness and business alignment of HR functions than their competitors who didn?t embrace strategic workforce planning.

Back To The 50?s Car Show ? Halogen Sealed Beams Everywhere ...

This custom low-rider was getting lots of attention even though it had stock sealed beam headlights!

This past weekend was the 39th annual Back to the 50s car show held at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds in St. Paul, MN. I got to go for a day and see everything and I must say the event was a blast! There were big name vendors like Chevrolet, Rousch, Ford and many smaller local vendors like Union Speed & Style and lots of flea-market style setups selling all sorts of automotive goodies! It was just incredible to see so many restored classics, hot rods, street rods and wild custom muscle cars. Arguably the biggest attraction for myself was trying to spot the different lighting upgrades these enthusiasts were doing to their classic domestic rides. It was unfortunate to see so many cars with stock halogen sealed beam headlights though. The vast majority of these vehicles had stock headlights, tail lights and interior lighting. It was only a characteristic of the nicest of all vehicles in attendance to have upgraded headlights.

I noticed a trend throughout the entire show, that was if a vehicle did have upgraded forward lighting, it was a stock-style composite housing with a blue halogen light bulb inside. I did not see a single HID conversion kit fitted car, or any type of radical LED headlight. I thought for sure there would be SOMEONE there with some crazy headlights, I must have just missed them. The second most common site to see on these cars was some type of film or vinyl over the headlight to give it a different look, but sometimes it was even done on the stock sealed beam headlights! We saw mostly 7? round headlights and many 5.25? round headlights, but I don?t think anyone had rectangular headlights in attendance. It really goes to show how far headlight design has changed since the middle of the 20th century. If you need new headlights for your classic car, then look no further than TLG-Auto.
