NCAA Sweet 16: South, Midwest regions feature top-flight teams

There's NCAA royalty: Duke and Kansas. There are NCAA perennials: Florida, Michigan State, and Louisville. Michigan and Oregon have worked hard to get here. And then there's Cinderella, otherwise known as Florida Gulf Coast University, taking part in Friday night's Sweet 16 action.

In the Midwest, top seed Louisville will face Oregon, seeded a debatable 12th this year. After reaching the 2012 Final Four, the Cardinals are looking to go back-to-back for the first time since they did it in 1982 and 1983. They easily dispatched North Carolina A&T in their first tournament game, then ran past Colorado State to reach the Sweet 16.

The Cardinals are paced by guard Russ Smith, whose continual drives to the basket put tremendous pressure on the other team's defense.

The Ducks, coming off an impressive win in the Pac-12 conference championship game, downed both Oklahoma State and Saint Louis to punch their ticket to Indy. Third year head coach Dana Altman, who previously had taken Creighton to the NCAA tournament, has his team playing at a high level.

Also in the Midwest Friday night, second seed Duke takes on third seed Michigan State. This game could be considered an old-school match-up, as both teams have veteran lineups and coaches with extensive NCAA tourney experience.

Mike Krzyzewski's Blue Devil squad beat both Albany and Creighton, while Tom Izzo's Spartans have looked solid in wins over Valparaiso and Memphis.

Kansas is still alive as the top seed in the South region. The Jayhawks will meet fourth seed Michigan in Cowboys Stadium outside Dallas. KU had to scrap its way to?a win over Western Kentucky in the second round. Then, they had to overcome a poor first-half shooting performance against North Carolina before finally pulling away from the Tar Heels.

Briton kidnapped in Nigeria's Lagos freed

ABUJA (Reuters) - A British businessman kidnapped last week in an upmarket district of Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos has been released, Britain's Foreign Office website said on Thursday.

Kidnapping of expatriates by armed gangs seeking ransom money has long been rife in Nigeria's oil producing southeast but is rare in Lagos where most foreigners live.

"A British national was kidnapped on Victoria Island, Lagos on 23 March (and was) subsequently released on 27 March," a statement on the British website said.

Nigerian police said last week the man was trailed on his way back from a nightclub at around 11 p.m. (2200 GMT) on Saturday in the high-end residential and business neighbourhood.

A security source, who asked not to be named, said the Briton works for an oil company.

In Nigeria's mainly Muslim north, kidnappings of foreigners for ideological motives by Islamist groups have taken a deadlier turn. Militant group Ansaru killed seven foreign hostages this month, authorities from some of the affected countries said.

Malala Yousafzai, shot for defying Taliban, to write book

LONDON (AP) ? Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head by the Taliban as she returned home from school, is writing a book about the traumatic event and her long-running campaign to promote children's education.

Publisher Weidenfeld and Nicolson announced that it would release "I am Malala" in Britain and Commonwealth countries this fall. Little, Brown and Co. will publish the 15-year-old's memoir in the United States and much of the rest of the world.

"Malala is already an inspiration to millions around the world. Reading her story of courage and survival will open minds, enlarge hearts, and eventually allow more girls and boys to receive the education they hunger for," said Michael Pietsch, executive vice president and publisher of Little, Brown.

A Taliban gunman shot Malala on Oct. 9 in northwestern Pakistan. The militant group said it targeted her because she promoted "Western thinking" and, through a blog, had been an outspoken critic of the Taliban's opposition to educating girls.

The shooting sparked outrage in Pakistan and many other countries, and her story drew global attention to the struggle for women's rights in Malala's homeland. The teen even made the shortlist for Time magazine's "Person of the Year" in 2012.

Malala was brought to the U.K. for treatment and spent several months in a hospital undergoing skull reconstruction and cochlear implant surgeries. She was released last month and has started attending school in Britain.

Malala said in a statement Wednesday that she hoped telling her story would be "part of the campaign to give every boy and girl the right to go to school.

"I hope the book will reach people around the world, so they realize how difficult it is for some children to get access to education," she said. "I want to tell my story, but it will also be the story of 61 million children who can't get education."

Publishers did not reveal the price tag for the book deal.

China's 3 big airlines post sharply lower profits

HONG KONG (AP) ? China's three major state-owned airlines posted sharp drops in annual profit because of the weak global economy, higher jet fuel prices and smaller foreign currency gains.

China Southern, the country's biggest carrier by passenger numbers, said Wednesday that profit plunged by half compared with the previous year. Rivals Air China and China Eastern reported that earnings tumbled by about a third.

"Demand in the aviation industry in 2012 continued to be weak as a result of the slow recovery of the U.S. economy, the on-going European debt crisis and the global recession," Beijing-based Air China said. "Escalating operating costs from high jet fuel price and the intensifying competition added to the challenges faced by the industry."

China Eastern said the average price of fuel rose 2 percent. The Shanghai-based carrier reported that profit fell 35 percent to 2.95 billion yuan.

Jet fuel costs rose the most for China Southern. The airline, based in the southern economic hub of Guangzhou, said it spent 33 billion yuan ($5.3 billion) on fuel last year, 14.5 percent more than in 2011.

Fuel is the biggest single expense for the airlines. Chinese airlines can do little to keep their fuel bill under control. One reason is that fuel for domestic flights is supplied by a state-owned monopoly, which marks up prices "higher than an otherwise open market would allow," Barclays analyst Patrick Xu wrote in a report.

Chinese carriers also don't typically use hedging contracts to lock in part of their fuel bill, like other airlines do, because they lost a lot of money in 2008 using such techniques, Xu added.

The three airlines also reported sharply lower foreign exchange gains as the yuan's appreciation against the dollar slowed from the year before. Chinese airlines are vulnerable to currency fluctuations because while they mostly earn in yuan, their expenses for fuel and new airplanes are in dollars.

Air China, which said profit dropped 35 percent to 4.6 billion yuan last year, reported a net foreign exchange gain of 124 million yuan, compared with 3 billion yuan in 2011. The other two carriers also reported sharp declines in foreign currency income.

China Southern carried 86.5 million passengers last year, or 7.2 percent more than 2011, but earnings fell by half to 2.6 billion yuan. The airline warned that "demand for short and mid-distance aviation will be further suppressed" as China rapidly expands its high speed rail network. Authorities plan to expand the network to 18,000 kilometers (11,120 miles) by 2015, about double the 9,300 km currently.

Bieber Sets Record Straight On Neighbor Incident

Salivating haters can go ahead and close their gaping mouths on this one. The stories of Justin running amok in his neighborhood, threatening people are starting to sound a little exaggerated. There is nothing more the troll-infested new media likes more than a fallen star. In this case, the boy who started as a viral online wonder has been going through some changes. His thick eyebrows and boyish face have taken a backseat, and his outlandish driving and temper have taken the fore front. But what exactly has been going on? It began with a video of him yelling at a pap who apparently swarmed him on his way to his car. It was a side of Justin that even his obsessive Tween fans didn’t want to believe. It seemed only weeks before we started hearing about another allegedly violent run-in, this time with a neighbor. The original story goes that he got a really sweet Ferrari delivered to his house, then decided to take it for a spin. One particular neighbor who has young kids wasn’t happy about what he says was a 100MPH joyride through the streets. He supposedly went onto Justin’s property and started giving him a [...]

EE switches on 4G in 13 more areas, claims half of the UK population now covered

After spending a week relaxing in the Cumbrian countryside, EE's back on the road, bringing its 4G LTE network to some relatively more populated areas. The company has announced 13 additional locations it's coating with high-speed coverage today: Bradford, Bingley, Doncaster, Dudley, Harpenden, Leicester, Lichfield, Loughborough, Luton, Reading, Shipley, St Albans and West Bromwich. This brings the total number of regions under the 4G umbrella to 50, which EE claims, coincidentally, now covers 50 percent of UK residents. A higher June rollout target has also been set -- switch-flipping is planned in 30 extra towns and cities before the end of that (hopefully) summer month. EE is certainly scrambling to get as much coverage as possible, as well as your business, before any of the other players get a chance to join the 4G club. Oh, and if it's shiny new handsets you're after, remember Galaxy S 4 pre-orders are live on EE's website today.

Kerry arrives in Iraq on unannounced visit

(AP) ? U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is in Iraq on an unannounced visit to urge Iraqi leaders to stop Iranian overflights of arms and fighters heading to Syria and to overcome sectarian differences that still threaten Iraqi stability 10 years after the American-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein.

Kerry flew into Baghdad on Saturday from Amman after accompanying President Barack Obama to Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan.

Officials traveling with him said he would press Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other senior officials on democratic reforms and directly urge them to stop overflights of Iranian aircraft carrying military personnel and equipment to support the Syrian government as it battles rebels.

The overflights have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq and Kerry will tell the Iraqis that allowing them to continue will make the situation in Syria worse and threaten Iraq's stability.

A senior U.S. official said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," as well as overland shipments to Syria through Iraq from Iran was inconsistent with Iranian claims that they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that Iranian-backed extremists may gain a foothold in the country.

The official said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but the official said that since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities.

Kerry will tell al-Maliki that Iraq cannot be part of the political discussion about Syria's future until it clamps down on the shipments.

As Iraq approaches provincial elections next month, Kerry will also stress the importance of ensuring that all elements of society feel enfranchised, the official said. A recent decision to delay the polls in Anbar and Nineveh provinces is a "serious setback" to Iraq's democratic institutions and should be revisited, the official said.

Kerry also plans to speak by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions - especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey. He will not meet with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari because he is in Doha for an Arab League meeting

He will stress the "importance of maintaining the unity of Iraq," say that "separate efforts undercut the unity of the country" and that "The Kurdish republic cannot survive financially without the support of Baghdad," the official said.

Kerry's visit if the first by a U.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden.

'Voice' season premiere to be 'the best episode'

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Get ready for some chair-spinning action -- "The Voice" returns for an all-new season of the talent competition Monday night. But this time, the would-be contestants won't be the only new part of the show.

Coaches Usher and Shakira are joining the act, filling the spots vacated by Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green -- not that the shakeup should concern faithful fans. According to host Carson Daly, the new additions just add to the appeal.

"You're looking at a guy that could have been on any one of these (TV? talent) shows," Daly said, gesturing toward Usher, who joined him on TODAY Monday morning. "But him and Shakira, they were fans of 'The Voice,' and that was a great place to start."

It's especially great for fellow fans, who have high hopes for season four.

"(Monday night) is the best episode of 'The Voice' ever," Daly added, "and it's in large part to Usher and Shakira, Blake (Shelton) and Adam (Levine)."

As for Usher, he offered a sneak peek of the talent reviews to come by evaluating TODAY's Matt Lauer -- who didn't even sing.

"Well, the first thing that I have to make you aware of is that you were incredible -- an incredible talent," the singer said with a smile before demonstrating how he would persuade Lauer to join his team. "In my opinion, I think that you need a coach that really understands how to nurture your talent. Now you've heard from the rest of them, you need to rock with the best of them."

See just how the actual auditioners handle the evaluations when the "The Voice" returns Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Are you looking forward to seeing what Usher and fellow new coach Shakira bring to "The Voice"? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

HBT: Yankees agree with Chien-Ming Wang

The news comes via Jon Heyman on Twitter.

Wang drew interest after a strong showing in the World Baseball Classic with Chinese Taipei. The right-hander did not allow a run in 12 innings of work, surrendering ten hits and just one walk.

Wang spent the last two seasons with the Washington Nationals without much success, posting an aggregate 4.94 ERA in 94.2 innings. He missed time last year due to a left thigh strain and a right hip strain. Prior to that, he missed the latter half of the 2009 season, all of 2010, and the first half of the 2011 season due to right shoulder surgery.

Heyman suggests the signing gives the Yankees flexibility to make a trade:

(AP) ? Syria's president has vowed to rid the country of Muslim extremists whom he blamed for a suicide bombing that killed 42 people, including a top Sunni preacher.

Friday's statement by Bashar Assad came hours after the explosion ripped through a mosque in the heart of Damascus, killing Sheikh Mohammad Said Ramadan al-Buti.

It was one of the most stunning assassinations of the two-year civil war and the first time a suicide bomber struck inside a mosque.

Al-Buti was a staunch supporter of Assad. More than 84 were wounded in the attack.

In the statement carried by Syria's state news agency, Assad says al-Buti represented true Islam in facing "the forces of darkness and extremist" ideology.

Assad says his forces will "wipe out" and "clean our country" of the attackers.

Should we allow employees to use DOL's timekeeping app for ...

Q. We have heard that the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has issued a timekeeping app that allows employees to track their time on smartphones. Should we permit employees to use this in our workplace?

A. The DOL has indeed issued an application for use on Apple iPhones so workers can track their hours worked. It?s basically an interactive time sheet that lets employees use their phones to record when they clock in and out for shifts and breaks. (Take a look at the app here.)

When the app was first introduced, some ?employers saw this as a radical change to their record-keeping requirements. The reality is, this app should have little effect on most employers? day-to-day operations.

First, the app simply allows employees to track their hours worked, which is really nothing new. Employees have been able to track their hours worked all along, using their computers or even the back of an envelope. They just haven?t been able to do it on a mobile device.

Second, the app can be easily manipulated and modified to the point that most employers should be able to challenge the legitimacy and accuracy of the records. For example, if an employee forgets to clock out or makes an error, the app allows a manual override and a manual change to the employee?s clock-in or clock-out time. The app does not appear to track these modifications or changes.

Third, contrary to some people?s initial concerns, the DOL cannot track employee?s use of the app for enforcement purposes.

Don?t overreact if you learn that employees are using the timekeeping app. Unless the employee is violating your policy by using the app (having a mobile device in an unauthorized work area), we recommend that em??ployers not draw attention to use of the app.

Certainly don?t take any disciplinary action against an employee for using it. Any adverse action for using the app could result in a retaliation claim.

NYT: ABC crafting live streaming app for tablets, phones

NYT: ABC crafting live streaming app for tablets, phones

According to unidentified sources speaking with The New York Times' media desk, ABC is currently working on a mobile application to bring its broadcast programming to mobiles and tablets. Unlike CBS' offering, which offers a select choice of programs 24 hours after airing on broadcast TV via its mobile app, ABC's is said to sync up with existing cable and satellite providers to provide live TV on-the-go -- a first in the television industry. Beyond just offering cable and satellite customers a way to extend their viewing options, the app is said to potentially extend the reach of ABC's ad network at a crucial moment when traditional broadcast network ad revenues are being threatened by other mediums taking a piece of the pie.

It seems that ABC's parent, the Walt Disney Company, is looking to forge its own digital path when it comes to TV, rather than waiting for its multi-company partnership with Hulu to right itself. Disney and its several partners are said to be in talks to buy each other out; meanwhile, Hulu is left without captain at the helm.

Self Improvement Made Easy With These Simple Tips | network ...

You could change your life drastically thanks to personal development. This can make you wonder where to begin to start making positive changes to your life. The advice provided below will assist you in determining how you can help yourself.

Simplify your life by getting organized. Organizing things will give you the feeling that you?ve accomplished something, and increase your confidence levels as well. Additionally, it will remove the stress caused by living a disorganized life. When you know where everything is, you probably feel calmer.

TIP! Research and implement the successful practices of others. Pick out the most essential success habits from each person you research, then practice these habits until they embed themselves into your daily routine.

Behind every great champion is an equally great coach. It?s important that every champion has a fantastic coach or mentor. If you have a talent or skill, you should be open to teaching others who would like to learn. Without mentoring, there is no way people can truly perform to the best of their abilities. Everyone who is a great success had a great coach.

A better diet can help you get rid of depression; try eating more complex carbohydrates. If you don?t get enough complex carbs, you will be low on serotonin. You can do this by eating more raw veggies, fruits, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and assorted beans.

Find texts and phrases that sooth and encourage you. Some people find inspiration in the Bible, and others find it in self-help books. If you are able to use this as a base of encouragement, you will be able to deal with hard situations.

TIP! Write a pep talk about yourself. List the things that you love about yourself on a postcard.

Humility is a key factor in personal development. When you accept that you are but a tiny speck in the scope of our universe, you can begin to realize that there is much to learn if you hope to advance. Once you have fully accepted this realization, you?ll seek to better yourself by learning and understanding as much as you can about the vast world in which you live.

How healthy your body is, affects how healthy your mind is. Be sure to get plenty of exercise and nourishment. Your mind and body must both be healthy to feel your best.

Try not to take yourself too seriously. Humans are just a very small bit of the universe. Everyone has the responsibility to learn and grow and we need to support each other in this quest. Learn as much as you can from each person you meet. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish and learn when your mind is open to new things.

TIP! Know which values and characteristics are important to you before designing a program for personal development. It wouldn?t make sense to work on areas in your life that contradict your values.

Sexual capital is a new trait that?s extremely important to develop. This has nothing to do with using sex appeal to get the things you covet. It has more to do with charm. Not everyone has great social skills, but these may help you improve all other aspects of your personal life.

As pointed out here, helping yourself in a continuing process that requires the pursuit of knowledge and more than a little hard work. If you want to see genuine change, you have to stay dedicated to the process. Applying the tips mentioned in this article can guide you to much better life.

A high proportion of deposits in Cypriot banks are believed to be held by Russians and Cypriot Finance Minister Michalis Sarris is flying to Moscow Tuesday to meet with his Russian counterpart. Financial markets are reported to be tense Tuesday as investors await a vote in Cyprus on a contentious plan to help fund the country's bailout by a one off charge on bank deposits although there may be a change to the proposed levy to spare small account holders. (AP) ? Cypriot government officials sought Tuesday to alleviate the pain on small savers from a plan to raid bank deposits that has caused outrage in the country and sent jitters through European financial markets.

Just hours ahead of an expected vote in the country's 56-member Parliament on the seizure of a percentage of deposits, officials sought to limit the impact on small savers. They even hinted that the country was looking to limit the amount it is to raise from the measure's imposition ? a move that could cover any shortfall from freeing smaller deposits from the charge.

A new draft bill discussed in Parliament's finance committee proposed to spare all deposits below ?20,000 ($25,900) from a levy. Those between ?20,000 and ?100,000 ($129,290) would still have a 6.75 percent charge imposed, and those above ?100,000 would be hit for 9.9 percent, in line with the original plan put forward at the weekend.

A vote in favor of the bank account confiscation is needed if Cyprus is to get ?10 billion in rescue loans from its euro partners and the International Monetary Fund. The seizure of deposits is meant to raise ?5.8 billion, which is part of the country's rescue.

If the vote fails to get through Parliament, Cyprus faces potential bankruptcy and a possible from the euro, which could reignite concerns in financial markets over the future of the single currency.

Although Cyprus is the smallest eurozone country to be bailed out, the details of the plan sent shockwaves through the single currency area as it was the first time European authorities have targeted people's bank accounts. Other bailed out countries such as Greece, Ireland and Portugal have raised funds through imposing new taxes.

Proponents of the Cypriot account levy argue that this way gets foreigners who have taken advantage of Cyprus's low-tax regime to share the cost of the bailout of the country's banks, which have been hit hard by their over-exposure to bad Greek debt.

About a third of all deposits in Cypriot banks are believed to be held by Russians. As lawmakers wrangled, Finance Minister Michalis Sarris was to fly to Moscow Tuesday afternoon to meet with his Russian counterpart.

Opponents point out that a blanket charge on people's bank accounts will hurt ordinary Cypriots more, and could shake the confidence of all in the country's banking sector. And by going after deposits, European policymakers have set a precedent that could be repeated in the future. The worry of bank runs across Europe lies at the heart of the concerns in markets at the moment.

In a sign of the scale of disagreement over the deposit charge, the country's central bank governor, Panicos Demetriades, recommended that no accounts below ?100,000 be touched. That level represents the amount of savings that are supposed to be insured if a bank collapses.

"We believe that deposits up to ?100,000 should not be levied," said Demetriades. "The credibility of and trust in the banking sector depends on this."

Banks have been shut until Thursday to prevent a bank run. Demetriades said he expects at least 10 percent of deposits to be withdrawn when the banks re-open.

"We expect outflows, but the European Central Bank has assured us that it will provide adequate liquidity to the banks because it will consider them viable," he said.

Eurozone finance ministers held a telephone conference Monday night, and concluded that small depositors should not be hit as hard as others. They said the Cypriot authorities should stagger the deposit seizures more, but insisted that the overall take should stay the same.

The new Cypriot proposal, if approved, would raise less funds than the ?5.8 demanded. It was unclear how the shortfall might be made up.

However, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone conversation Monday night that "the possibility of reducing the requirements from self-raised funds is being explored," government spokesman Christos Stylianides said Tuesday.

The two leaders were expected to speak again on Tuesday, Stylianides said.

Cyprus's central bank governor noted that the ECB "believes we have to try to protect guaranteed deposits."

Demetriades stressed the importance of the bill being voted on and passing in Parliament.

"It's important for the future of the banking sector and the economy that this bill is passed," he said in the committee meeting, adding that "we believe that once trust is restored, deposits will return."

Christine Lagarde, the head of the International Monetary Fund which is participating in Cyprus's bailout, said in Frankfurt that the IMF was "extremely supportive of the Cypriot authorities' intentions to introduce more progressive rates in the one-off tax."

Hacker gets 3-1/2 years for stealing iPad data

A hacker was sentenced on Monday to three years and five months in prison for stealing the personal data of about 120,000 Apple iPad users, including big-city mayors, a TV network news anchor and a Hollywood movie mogul.

Andrew Auernheimer, 27, had been convicted in November by a Newark, New Jersey, jury of one count of conspiracy to access AT&T servers without permission, and one count of identity theft.

The sentence imposed by U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton in Newark was at the high end of the 33- to 41-month range that the U.S. Department of Justice had sought.

Prosecutors had said prison time would help deter hackers from invading the privacy of innocent people on the Internet.

Among those affected by Auernheimer's activities were ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Hollywood movie producer Harvey Weinstein, prosecutors said.

"When it became clear that he was in trouble, he concocted the fiction that he was trying to make the Internet more secure, and that all he did was walk in through an unlocked door," U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said in a statement. "The jury didn't buy it, and neither did the court in imposing sentence."

Auernheimer had sought probation. His lawyer had argued that no passwords were hacked, and that a long prison term was unjustified given that the government recently sought six months for a defendant in a case involving "far more intrusive facts."

The lawyer, Tor Ekeland, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Monday. He has said his client would appeal.

Ekeland is also a lawyer for Matthew Keys, a deputy social media editor at Thomson Reuters Corp. who was suspended with pay on Friday.

Keys was indicted last week in California on federal charges of aiding the Anonymous hacking collective by giving a hacker access to Tribune Co. computer systems in December 2010.

The alleged events occurred before Keys began working at the website Reuters.com. Ekeland on Friday said Keys "maintains his innocence" and "looks forward to contesting these baseless charges.

'Internet troll'
Prosecutors called Auernheimer a "well-known computer hacker and Internet 'troll,'" who with co-defendant Daniel Spitler and the group Goatse Security tried to disrupt online content and services.

The two men were accused of using an "account slurper" designed to match email addresses with identifiers for iPad users, and of conducting a "brute force" attack to extract data about those users, who accessed the Internet through the AT&T servers.

This stolen information was then provided to the website Gawker, which published an article naming well-known people whose emails had been compromised, prosecutors said.

Spitler pleaded guilty in June 2011 to the same charges for which Auernheimer was convicted, and is awaiting sentencing.

Gawker was not charged in the case. In its original article, Gawker said Goatse obtained its data through a script on AT&T's website that was accessible to anyone on the Internet. Gawker also said in the article that it established the authenticity of the data through two people listed among the names. A Gawker spokesman on Monday declined to elaborate.

AT&T has partnered with Apple in the United States to provide wireless service on the iPad. After the hacking, it shut off the feature that allowed email addresses to be obtained.

The case is U.S. v. Auernheimer, U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, No. 11-00470.

Aviary launches photo-editing SDK for Windows 8 developers

DNP

Thanks to a partnership with AMD and Microsoft, Aviary's Photo Editor SDK will be available to Windows 8 developers starting today. While in the long run this could mean Windows 8 will gain more photo-centric apps, this new SDK will bring the the photo service to apps running on Windows 8 notebooks and tablets immediately, and those devices running AMD processors should benefit from "higher, optimized performance," according to the company.

The Aviary app has been available on iOS and Android since last summer, though its customizable SDK is also used by services such as Flickr and Twitter, which integrate the photo-editing features into their respective apps. To kick off its launch on Microsoft's most current OS, Aviary announced partnerships with Rowi, Memorylage and several other apps available for download in the Windows Store.

New Curiosity 'safe mode' status expected to be brief

Mar. 18, 2013 ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is expected to resume science investigations in a few days, as engineers quickly diagnosed a software issue that prompted the rover to put itself into a precautionary standby status over the weekend.

Curiosity initiated this automated fault-protection action, entering "safe mode" at about 8 p.m. PDT (11 p.m. EDT) on March 16, while operating on the B-side computer, one of its two main computers that are redundant to each other. It did not switch to the A-side computer, which was restored last week and is available as a back-up if needed. The rover is stable, healthy and in communication with engineers.

The safe-mode entry was triggered when a command file failed a size-check by the rover's protective software. Engineers diagnosed a software bug that appended an unrelated file to the file being checked, causing the size mismatch.

"This is a very straightforward matter to deal with," said the project manager for Curiosity, Richard Cook of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We can just delete that file, which we don't need any more, and we know how to keep this from occurring in the future."

The mission's science observations have been on hold since a memory glitch on the A-side computer on Feb. 27, which prompted controllers to command a swap from the A-side computer to the B-side computer. That operator-commanded swap put Curiosity into safe mode for two days. The rover team restored the availability of the A-side as a backup and prepared the B-side to resume full operations.

Cautiously bringing Curiosity out of safe mode status on the B-side is expected to take a couple of days. A four-week moratorium on sending commands to the rover will begin April 4 due to solar system geometry of Mars passing nearly directly behind the sun from Earth's perspective. The moratorium is a precaution against interference by the sun corrupting a command sent to the rover.

NASA's Mars Science Laboratory project is using Curiosity and the rover's 10 science instruments to investigate environmental history within Gale Crater, a location where the project has found that conditions were long ago favorable for microbial life. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington.

Union raises questions on Geon demise

Updated at 2:35 pm today

An Australian union is raising questions about the sale and winding up of Australasian printing business Geon Group.

The firm went into administration late last month and more than 650 workers in Australia now expect to be retrenched, the ABC reports.

The receiver sold the company's New Zealand assets to rival Blue Star Group, which has retained 76 staff but let 185 go. The firm kept on employees at Geon's Christchurch-based label company Kiwi Labels.

Blue Star has also bought Geon's operations in New South Wales and Victoria, and the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says it is refusing to offer employment to existing staff.

The impasse has prompted Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten to intervene to guarantee Geon staff early access to their entitlements.

AMWU spokeswoman Lorraine Cassin said discussions are ongoing about selling Geon's operations in Tasmania and Western Australia, but the union is upset by what has unfolded at the firm's NSW and Victorian divisions.

Ms Cassin said the union had been informed through the receivers that Blue Star was going to make substantial job offers to those employees. However the union was advised by the company on Thursday that it was not going to offer any employment due to the enterprise agreement in place.

Enterprise agreements in Australian firms set out the employment conditions between staff and an employer.

Ms Cassin said the union was trying to find out what led to the viable company winding up, leaving workers virtually unemployed, and would call on the ACCC (Australian Competition and Consumer Commission) to look at competition issues.

Geon Group employed 678 workers in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and Western Australia.

Administrators McGrathNicol and the company had not immediately commented to the ABC.

Pope Francis speaks during a meeting with the media at the Pope VI hall, at the Vatican, Saturday, March 16, 2013.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? Pope Francis has 1.2 billion followers in the Roman Catholic Church, but he's not following a single one of them on Facebook or Twitter.

In a fast-paced, globalized world in which billions send emails, share photos on smartphones and get their instant news online, the newly elected pope still uses a typewriter for work. On his time off, he follows the games of his favorite soccer club on the radio.

Yet, even though he's not busy chatting, poking and commenting online, the pope recognizes the importance of technology in today's world.

As a cardinal, Francis had a Facebook account, although he didn't manage it himself, and he blessed the creation of a virtual parish where many could join in prayer online.

"The cardinal didn't understand any of that but I explained it to him. I showed him the computer screen ... he looked at the site and authorized us to pray to the Holy One, online," said Guillermo Marco, the pope's former spokesman.

"He's a man who likes to listen," Marco said. "As cardinal, many would ask to get an audience with him. They'd talk for 45 minutes straight and he'd stay quiet. Then, he'd say three phrases. In modern terms you could say that he's very Twitter-like."

Francis seems likely to follow the Vatican's social media strategy to help with missionary outreach. In a 2012 interview with veteran Italian Vatican journalist Andrea Tornielli, then-Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio said the church in Argentina knew well that digital outreach was necessary to reach the faithful.

"We try to make contact with families that don't come to church. Rather than being a church that welcomes and receives, we try to be a church that goes outside to men and women who don't come to us, who don't know us or are indifferent to us," he said.

Organizing masses in public squares is part of that, but there's more.

"We also try to reach those farther away by digital means, using the Web and brief (text) messages," he said.

Pope Benedict XVI joined the Twittersphere late last year tweeting from a personal account along with the world's celebrities, leaders and ordinary folk. Many were expecting Francis to take over his Twitter handle, but few knew that he wasn't tech savvy.

Even if he takes the account, it is unlikely that Francis himself will type his punchy one-liners about reaching out to the poor and ending corruption into 140-character bites. The 85-year-old Benedict, who didn't carry a cellphone and wrote longhand, left that job to one of his aides.
